WE HAVE SUCCESS STORIES EVERYWHERE!
Our strength is linking the best of the University of Maryland with organizations that are looking to Keep Learning. The following are just a few examples of the kinds of programs that we've helped to facilitate.
National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
We developed a relationship between the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the University of Maryland departments of geography and government and politics. Through this program, NGA employees work toward a professional graduate degree without ever leaving the building; they simply walk down the hall of their Bethesda offices. The program leads to a master of arts in geography, with a political geography track custom-designed for NGA. In August 2004, the first 16 NGA College students have a M.A. in geography from the University of Maryland.
Fermentation Microbiology
In cooperation with the A. James Clark School of Engineering, we established a new partnership with UMBC and the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute. Together we offer an annual two-day, hands-on fermentation microbiology workshop and a one-day symposium on state-of-the-art fermentation processes and practices. The program draws an international audience. The program now includes a three-day laboratory workshop in protein purification of biotechnology products. Experts in the field provide an opportunity for participants to learn principles of bacterial and fungal fermentation and to apply what they learn. And for the academic departments, it's one more way that they're able to reach out to an ever-increasing international audience.
Introduction to Spanish Language and Culture
We introduced the University of Maryland College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU) to a trio of grateful organizations: Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., McHale & McHale Landscape Design, Inc. and Chapel Valley Landscape Company, both in Maryland. Managers participated in intense, six-week language workshops with the goal of learning conversational Spanish to enable them to better communicate with their employees. Thus far, participants include landscape managers, nurses and other health care professionals, but the program can be adapted to any organization with a similar need.
